How to Study Effectively for Academic Assessments

So, rather than asking, “How many hours should I study?”, I would ask a better question:

“What can I do today that will make it easier for me to remember and use this information next week?”

Start With the Assessment, Not the Textbook

Before opening your notes, find out exactly what you are preparing for.

This sounds obvious, but it is easy to spend hours studying material that is only loosely connected to what you will actually be assessed on. Your first job is therefore to understand the assessment requirements.

Space Your Revision Across Several Days

If your assessment is three weeks away, there is little reason to learn everything in one weekend.

Spacing gives you an opportunity to forget some of the material and then retrieve it again. That repeated process is far more useful for long-term retention than repeatedly studying the same material in one sitting.

Research on distributed practice has consistently supported spreading learning across time. The major review by Dunlosky and colleagues rated distributed practice as a high-utility technique because its benefits extend across different learners, materials and learning tasks.

A simple schedule might look like this:

First session

Learn the material and make sure you understand the basic ideas.

Second session

Return to it after a few days and test yourself without your notes.

Third session

Complete questions or apply the ideas to a new example.

Fourth session

Revisit the areas you still cannot retrieve confidently.

You do not need to create a complicated revision algorithm. The important part is that learning happens over multiple sessions rather than being compressed into one marathon.

Interestingly, research on retrieval schedules suggests that repeated relearning can have substantial benefits for long-term retention without requiring an enormous increase in practice time.

Use Practice Questions Properly

Practice questions are valuable, but simply completing them is not enough.

A business student might need to analyse case studies and connect theory to practical situations.

A mathematics student needs to solve problems and recognise which method applies.

The common principle is simple: practise doing the thing you will eventually be assessed on.

If the exam requires essays, write essays.

If it requires calculations, calculate.

If it requires analysis, analyse.

If it requires recalling terminology, test yourself on terminology.

This sounds straightforward, but it prevents one of the most common revision problems: becoming very good at studying about a subject without becoming good at actually performing in it.

Make Your Study Plan Specific

“I will study for three hours tonight” is not a particularly useful goal.

You could spend those three hours reorganising folders, highlighting paragraphs and watching videos without knowing whether you have learned anything.

Instead, make the outcome measurable.

There is another skill that often gets overlooked: knowing whether your study strategy is actually working.

The Education Endowment Foundation describes metacognition in terms of being aware of, reflecting on and directing your own thinking. Familiarity is not the same thing as mastery.

You can read a paragraph five times and think, “Yes, that makes sense.” But if you cannot explain it when the book is closed, your understanding may not yet be secure.

Be Careful With Highlighting and Rereading

I am not suggesting that highlighting is useless.

A highlighter can help you identify an important definition or return to a difficult section. Rereading can also be useful when you are initially trying to understand unfamiliar material.

The problem is relying on these activities as your main revision method.

Dunlosky and colleagues found that highlighting and rereading had considerably lower overall utility than practice testing and distributed practice.

So instead of spending an entire evening rereading a chapter, try this:

  1. Read a section carefully.
  2. Close the book.
  3. Explain the main idea from memory.
  4. Write down what you cannot remember.
  5. Reopen the material.
  6. Test yourself again later.

Studying while checking messages every few minutes feels harmless.

When the assessment is approaching, your priorities should change.

You are no longer trying to make beautiful notes on every page of the syllabus. You are trying to identify what you know, what you do not know and what the assessment is likely to require you to do.

Seven days before

Map the content and identify your weakest areas.

Five to six days before

Use retrieval practice to revisit major topics.

Three to four days before

Complete targeted practice questions and analyse your mistakes.

Two days before

Attempt a timed paper or assessment-style task.

The day before

Review difficult areas, key concepts and common mistakes. Avoid trying to relearn everything from scratch.

Assessment day

Use your remaining time for a short review rather than frantic cramming.

The exact schedule will depend on your subject and assessment, but the principle remains the same: move from learning towards retrieval, application and performance.
